Impressions Journal January 20, 2020

Happy 2020 Everyone!  Impressions Memory Care at Addington Place of Northville is near and dear to my heart, and I’m looking forward to sharing stories from our amazing team on how they are leading the commitment to bringing Joy, Partnership, Meaningful Activity and Confidence to our residents.

What does Impressions look like through my eyes and heart? It looks like a smile and laugh from a resident when we recognize something that he or she uniquely loves. It looks like the satisfaction on someone’s face when they are given the opportunity to be the person helping another.  Don’t we all need to be needed?  I saw this last month, and will always treasure the memories.

When I met Mr. & Mrs. Solomon a few months back, at first glance they looked like could be Mr. & Mrs. Claus themselves with their beautiful white hair (and his beard), and their jolly spirits.  As we got to know each other, they shared that they had really enjoyed playing that part at Christmas, and that they had fond memories of those times.  As the holidays approached, they were as asked if they would like to play Santa and Mrs. Claus at our holiday parties.  With no hesitation, they agreed.  When I called their son to make sure it was OK with him, he was equally excited, telling me that they always like to help with anything they can.  On party day, Mr. and Mrs. Solomon were dressed in their special outfits and wheeled out to the Christmas tree to greet our visitors.  They graciously posed for pictures with people of all ages, HOHO’d and jangled a tambourine for 30 minutes.  In good spirits, they were then escorted to the neighborhoods and greeted with “Here Comes Santa Claus” as they took more pictures with our residents and families.  As a special treat, most of their own family showed up to cheer them on!

It was a great night for them and for our community.  When I went to personally thank them at the end of the evening, it was clear that this had been a meaningful activity for them.  It brought them Joy, and the opportunity to bring Joy to others.  That’s what we all strive for, isn’t?  Living in a Memory Care community does not mean you have to give up things you love and enjoy.  Our Impressions Memory Care program is committed to providing these moments in a unique way to everyone.  They may not involve something as visual and high energy as playing Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, but it will be unique for each individual!
